Differences between Layouts & Templates

I want to know what are the differences between Layouts and Templates.
What are they for? How and when we should use them?
Is there some demo that uses them?
I haven't found the answer in the documentation.

Layouts means you can set different layouts for pages (logo, header style, etc...) but templates are for Muffin Builder tool. So you can create different templates as examples and then while creating pages, you can import them into Muffin Builder.
