[TEMP RESOLVED] Client denied by server configuration for style.php, style-colors.php and others...
  • Our webserver is running Plesk 12 on Centos 6.5

    Just using Falco for first time and when users clicked on more than one page they were presented with HTTP 500 error where the server was not responding to their requests.

    Digging found these errors:

    [Sun Jan 18 14:57:02 2015] [error] [client x.x.x.x] client denied by server configuration: /var/www/vhosts/web.com/public_html/wp-content/plugins/revslider/rs-plugin/css/captions.php, referer: http://web.com/
    [Sun Jan 18 14:57:02 2015] [error] [client x.x.x.x] client denied by server configuration: /var/www/vhosts/web.com/public_html/wp-content/themes/falco/style.php, referer: http://web.com/
    [Sun Jan 18 14:57:02 2015] [error] [client x.x.x.x] client denied by server configuration: /var/www/vhosts/web.com/public_html/wp-content/themes/falco/style-colors.php, referer: http://web.com/
    [Sun Jan 18 15:03:03 2015] [error] [client x.x.x.x] client denied by server configuration: /var/www/vhosts/web.com/public_html/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php, referer: http://web.com/wp-admin/themes.php?theme=falco

    This triggered a ban of any ip that visited the domain in question and to resolve we added this to the .htaccess in the wp-content folder

    <Files *.php>
    deny from all
    </Files>

    <FilesMatch "^style\.php$">
    Allow From All
    </FilesMatch>

    <FilesMatch "^style-colors\.php$">
    Allow From All
    </FilesMatch>

    <FilesMatch "^captions\.php$">
    Allow From All
    </FilesMatch>

    <FilesMatch "^admin-ajax\.php$">
    Allow From All
    </FilesMatch>

    It would be good to know why this happened and why this is not included by default.

  • Our concern now is the security implications of the above settings? Can we set to allow only specific access by the non-default user and group?

    What does that need to look like?

    Thanks,
    Rich
  • I pulled this code from another of your themes forums so that wouldn't be accurate actually.  I do not have account for that theme support so I don't know the response someone on your team gave.

    The above addition to the .htacccess does work, but I need to know what permissions and access is required for the files I have listed.

    Please dig deeper.

  • Yes, I changed them even to
    777, but that did not fix the problem.

    This is the discussion that led to
    the at least temporary resolution of my issue.

    Again, my concern is why
    is what we set working and should it be done this way for security purposes.
