menu bar color wont change

i tried changing the color of the top menu bar from the options > color > header section but it won't work. The menu bar stays white

Do you have "Custom" skin selected or predefined? Because custom colors works only with custom skin selected.

i selected a color scheme from the theme options. what do you suggest i do to change the background color of the header

So you must select "Custom skin" instead and then you will be able to change colors in muffin options section. But if you want to use predefined, then you must play with css. In this case, below css will be fine:

.header-classic #Top_bar { background-color: #000 !important; }
