How are image URLs stored?

Hi,

When developing  a site we typically build it on a test server and migrate it to a live server when it is complete. Part of the migration involves modifying the URLs throughout the database to use the new domain of the live server.

We did one of these migrations with a site using the Be|theme and found that some of the images were still using the old URLs from the test server. 

Can you explain how the theme stores image URLs? Are they stored in plain-text in the database?
