Update theme issues

Hi there,

I just uploaded the new version of the theme via FTP. I am not sure why - but I got a 500 error message.
I had saved the old  theme file before overriding and rolled-back. Now it works again.
What should I do to update the theme? I am using several child themes with domain mapping but the parent theme is not touched. Can I delete the parent theme on the server and put the new file in place?
