Cant get the image sizing right for header menu

HI,

I've searched and searched fro the answer to this but have not been able to find a solution that works for me. Apologies if i'm missing it!

I'm using the mechanic layout for betheme and trying to add a feature image on each page to go behind the menu at the top of the page.

Every image size I try is too short or too narrow and i just can't work out what size image i should be using to start with.

Can anyone help?
