My customer needs a template with the menuchoices at the left.

Is it possible to replace the labels (text) by icons?

you can set the icons in the menu but only the slected from our repository:

Can you elaborate how we can do this I used a custom link with link text as an icon shortcode but it doesnt work.

You do not add a shortcode, you have to use a <i> tag, like this

This code will put out a home icon.
