how to make icon link open in new tab?

Hi there, 

I'm using the following shortcode to display my social media icons in a column: 
<a href="#"><i class="icon-facebook"></i></a>

When I use this code the link will open in the same page. Can you tell me how to adjust this code so that it will open in a new tab?
