Custom Background image on Active Menu Link

We would like to make the active link in our menu a custom background image instead of just a highlight.

Can you please assist us with this process?

we cannot use it like that, the background cannot overflow from the menu item.

That's fine we dont need it to overflow

We just need to get an image in the background of the active links.

Please first go to theme options>menu&action bar>menu and change the menu style to 'link color only'
