get_sidebar returning null

Hello,
get_sidebar() is returning null. I don't want to use the theme function for sidebars, would like to work with wp function. Went through the forum, it looks like you are redirecting the posts to theme menu (not an answer). Could you state, if it is possible to use the default wp sidebar, if called directly?
