Upgrading from version 12.8 to 21

Hi! My father's friend has asked me to help him with a website that hasn't really been updated for years. His site is https://privatepersonalchef.net and uses BeTheme version 12.8.

He has been getting the "Your Site is Experiencing a Technical Issue" error message so I went through and updated all his plugins, but he still can't edit the pages without getting the error message.

I suggested he purchase a new BeTheme license and downloaded the most recent version of the theme. I backed up the old v12.8 theme files, deleted the BeTheme folder, and added the new v21 files. A lot of the design looks OK but the menus and some of the headings aren't working so I reverted back to 12.8.

Any suggestions on the best way to update from 12.8 to v21 without having a lot of problems?
