Advice for Moving to Child Theme

I have inherited maintenance of a Betheme site which was originated by someone else. They set it up as a Betheme installation, rather than using a child theme. Since then, there has been customization mostly in the form of custom CSS added via the Appearance Customize Screen.

The theme has not been updated in awhile. This was due to not having the sign-on info that was used when the theme was initially purchased. I finally just bought a new license and would like to now update the theme (and switch to the child theme in the process).

Can anyone offer any advice on how to do this with the least pain? I assume I should back up my custom CSS, but what else can I expect will behave differently after I move to the child theme and update?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer!
