I'm getting this message when trying to install the theme:

The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive in php.ini.

I have a CPANEL installed instance of wordpress. Also, can someone summarize the difference and need of having the them and/or the child theme?

Updating the .htaccess with the following line seems to have fixed it:

php_value upload_max_filesize 256M

I would still like to know the purpose of the child theme though
