  also, this only seems to happen when clicking the checkbox for importing attachments.

  Hi,
  
  it's all because of the limits on your server side. So or you will import demo without attachments or you need to contact with your admin.

  Can you be more specific in what limits would be preventing us from importing the attachments? I am the server admin and I'm not aware of any settings that would be causing this problem.

  The following variables should be increased for sure: upload_max_filesize, max_execution_time, post_max_size, memory_limit and max_input_vars. You can check Appearance > System Status section as well for more details.

  hmm. i've increased these variables up to my server's hardcoded limits:

  
  

  Max_execution_time 120 
  max_input_time 120 
  memory_limit 256 MB
  post_max_size 128 MB 
  upload_max_filesize 128 MB 
  

  
  

  I've also increased the wp memory limit to 128mb.

  If you increased all above variables and still have a problem then we have no idea what else might be the problem. Maybe you should contact with your admin and ask him what else might be the reason? Because we really have no idea.

  I am the admin; we haven't had any issues importing any theme besides this one.

  
  

  Is there an xml file we can try instead of the auto-importer? The documentation eludes to one but no link is provided.

  I got the problem of when I click the betheme demo, and select demo, the next option of selecting theme not even show up

  @QigongTogether2 This is no determinant. You hadn't such issue before because you did never had such advanced importer that is importing all options and other stuff. That's the reason why you did never had such problem. We met with some users who got the same problem and guess where the problem was in ALL cases - on server side. We are 1000% sure about that.
  
  XML files are located under betheme.zip/functions/importer/demo/ folder but if you are unable to import them with our importer, you won't be able to import .xml files as well.

  The source of the issue is that the documentation is very unclear on what should be selected in the first drop down menu. If you select anything other than 'demo' and your chosen theme then try to import anything else, it essentially breaks the entire importer.

  
  

  I discovered this by deleting my wp database and starting over from scratch. The documentation needs to be clarified on the demo importer portion to avoid problems like this for other users.
