Is there anyway to replace the current style search box with a standard field with placeholder, just like the search box on this very site in top right hand corner?

Yes, it is possible. You can change it's style under Theme options > Header & Subheader > Extras section.

It reads, "Enter your search" inside the search field. I want it to read "Search Living Our Priorities"

Ok. So this text can be changed under Theme options > Translate > General section.
