responsive images: let image fill the full height of a column

Hi, 

I want to place an image next to a paragraph of text.
I want it to use the full with of the column, and to use the full height of the paragraph text.
It can be zoomed in/cropped to fill the space.

At the moment I used an image and made it 1/3rd width.  If I take a landscape image, it is not high enough, and if I take a portrait image, it gets way to big when viewed on smaller screens.
