Hi,

this is possible for blog posts, not portfolio items. If you want to change image size for portfolio items, you must modify add_image_size() function under functions/theme-functions.php file.

Yes, each modification like this needs needs coding. Not sure if this can be added because current users after update may lose their current sizes. The only thing we can do for you is move this border to the left side so border will be around image only and we can center this image for you. If this is enough, then please give us url to page from screenshot and we'll give you css.
