  I deactivated almost all plug-ins but could not find one that caused the incampatibility. I switched back to pagination in the meantime.

  You said "almost all". Did you deactivate all of them at once? Because the conflict could be also between plugins as well.

  Well, I would not think that I would have to de-activate things that came with the thme such as Revolution Slider or really essential things like Akismet... I deactivated anything that is not essential. I might experiment some more later, but right now we have a newsletter go out and people are on the site.
