Is there any way to style the large image the image gallery opens? background, arrows, x (close)
or better yet, is there any way to open a slider as a lightbox in the middle of the page?

However, I am not sure what slider you are talking about. Please describe it in more detail, or send some examples?

If I add an "image gallery" on my page, when I click on one thumbnail, it displays the selected image as a lightbox image on a black semi-transparente background. You can then navigate through all of the images in the gallery using arrows and close it with an "x" button.
Is there any way I can customize buttons, arrows, background, image size, etc?
All things you mentioned except image size can be changed with a custom CSS code.
