Media Library Multiple Image versions

Hi can, anyone confirm (Muffin Group) or deny if the following is correct and 'normal' for the theme and how it should function?

We have 3 sites running the BeTheme, one of which uses hundreds of images.  When backing the site up I was suprised how large the archive files were; after further investigation we found that the WordPress Media Library folders contained up to 19 variations at different resolutions of the same image.

This is not visible from within the media library itself (in the WordPress backend) but only if you archive the files off using FTP.

Essentially if your site has 50 images showing in you media library, you may have 950 equivalent images in uploads directory in the wp-content folder on your server.

Can some please advise if this is normal for the theme to reproduce up 19 images (at different resolutions) from 1 image in the media library?

Many Thanks - Adam
