    I'm using the classic lock out of habit. Since I'll probably only be working for another two years, it's not worth switching anymore.

    Does that mean the website's dashboard is so slow because of the classic lock?

    Most likely yes. You can do a test, and temporarily disable it in the Theme options -> Global -> Advanced:
