Updating theme after website creation?

Should one update the theme after creating their website? Im a complete n00b at this stuff. I know it says this .. <quote>If you haven`t changed any theme files, all you need to do to update
your current version is to download the latest package from ThemeForest,
unpack the files, and upload the new files on the server while
replacing the old files by overwriting them.</quote>

But if one makes a site and adds their own logos and icons is this essentially changing the theme files? Also is this the only way to update the theme?

PS how does one add their own icons and would this be modifying the theme files if the above is not?

Hi,

no, this is not changing files. Files customization is when you open one of theme files (css, php, html) thru FTP for example and edit. This is what we call files customization.

We do not have any option to add custom icons. And this can be done thru files customization only.

Thank you.. So there is not way for me to add my own icons that match or relate to my site other than customizing the theme? Is that not quite limited? You can add logo but not icons? Thanks

If you mean ICONS, you can use only icons that are included into theme. You can find them all http://themes.muffingroup.com/betheme/shortcodes/typography#icons

But instead, you can use images that may look as an icons and in this case, you can upload any you want.
