Be Theme Updates? Why so many?

Is it necessary to update my theme every week based on your notifications. It's been my experience in the past with themes that sometimes they will conflict with plugins. Are your changes so major that it is mandatory and necessary for security and the site? I've been working on a client site for 4 months, customizing, doing so many things. I'm nervous that if I update as many times as I get notification, I will break the current site; they're getting ready to go live. Thanks for your response!
