Site migration from subdomain to primary domain

edited July 2016 in Other
Hello MuffinGroup,

I am currently looking to push a development site live with betheme. The site has been developed in a new hosting environment from the current live site and on a new host (GoDaddy). I've developed the site using a subdomain (www.new.mysite.com) and am looking to change the site to the primary domain (www.mysite.com). All of the site's content is already in the desired end location on the new server, but paths need to change. I'd like to insure I approach this correctly with betheme and wordpress.

These are steps as i understand them. I will be pulling the DNS back from the current host to the registrar (Network Solutions) and pointing the primary domain to the new hosting IP (GoDaddy). I'll need to change the hosted domain on the GoDaddy side of cpanel but that doesn't concern you guys. Then I will need to change the Site and Wordpress URL in WP settings.

I've read about the Muffin Builder Migration Tool. I'm assuming i would use this after I've completed the above steps and not before, correct? I also see mentions of using WP Migrate DB in conjunction with the Muffin Builder Migration Tool...is this necessary or does the Muffin Builder Migration Tool address everything needed for migration now? I've used Muffin Builder extensively for pretty much all content throughout the site.

Just want to make sure I'm going about this correctly. Can you confirm the general process and steps I've outlined above and let me know if this sounds accurate?

So as i understand it...
1.) Repoint primary domain to new host IP
2.) Change site and wordpress url from subdomain (www.new.mysite.com) to primary domain (www.mysite.com) in WP settings.
3.) Use Muffin Builder Migrate Tool to replace all instances of new.mysite to mysite.com

Is this correct? Thanks in advance! Cheers

  • Hi,

yes, these are the correct steps of course. However, if something won't be clear enough, we recommend you to contact with your web developer.

    Thanks!
  • Hi,

I am in the same situation. I have done a "pre-production" site under the subdomain (pre.xxxxx.com) and now I what to migrate the site to www.xxxxx.com

I have done this rather easy, via r-sync. All is cloned and showing up in place, all good... but the LICENCE of the Theme is now working well. I go to edit a page and there is no builder options. Looks like the Visual Composer is not working well.

    I have tried:
    - deactivating theme and activating it again (in wordpress and Envato plugin)
    - buy another license and use a new API key from Envato

I have no more ideas. I shouldn't need a new license if I use the theme in same domain, but still, even with new I cannot make it work..

How do you re-activate the plugins again?? Please, I need help.

    Thanks and regards
  • @el_produccion Please send us dashboard access privately thru contact form which is on the right side at http://themeforest.net/user/muffingroup#contact and we will check what might be the reason. Please don’t forget to attach link to current topic so we know what for the access is.
  • Hi,

Thank you for the response. I did the process a couple of times more, on a different server, and now it is working well. Maybe it was an issue with database, mysql version or the process itself. I cannot tell, but it is working well.

If there is any further issues, or find out what it was, I will let you know. Thanks!
  • To sum up, after migration/cloning, the license is working well, without the need to do anything. I thought I may need a second license from Themeforest (well, I have two licences), but in an environment with two instances (pre and production), I think it is using just one of the licences.

Can you confirm the licence is per domain or per instance? i.e.: if we use pre.domain.cm, shop.domain.com and www.momain.com - we only require one licence?

    Thank you and regards
  • Yes, we confirm that the license is per one domain/site only.
  • Just to follow up the Muffin Builder Migrate tool worked perfectly. So easy and seamless. Have always done this a bit manually and this is an awesome feature. Thanks!
