External links redirect back to homepage

Hi, I'm trying to leave an external links on my site so I do:
[code]<a href="[externalsitename.com]">anchor text</a>[/code]
And yet every time it saves as mysitename.com/externalsitename.com
How can I fix this? Thanks.
P.S. I already tried going to permalinks and switching it back and forth but it still didn't work.
