404 page with menu

I would like the 404 page I select in the theme settings to have a menu like the other website pages. Currently it just shows the content of the page I have identified in the settings. I tried copying page.php from the main theme and renaming it 404.php in the child-theme. What code should I use for the 404.php in the child theme to display a 404 page with a menu?

we are really sorry but it is impossible to display menu on 404 pages.

Has there been any development on this? It would be a valuable option to have a custom 404 page.

Yes, it is possible to set up 404 custom page since a long time under Theme options > Pages > Error 404 section.
