  It may not seem as if there is a button placed on the frontpage, but we've used your own button in the item palette.
  
  Our issue is that we cant activate this button, even when we put a link in the "link target" field.

  Ok, you're right. We can see where the problem is now. It was looking like an image because you have lot's of bugs on your side and image overlap this button and that's why it's not clickable. Please open your website in Firefox html mode (CTRL+U) and check how many html errors you got. Please fix them first and all should be fine. Anticipating your question, yes, those errors are not associated with theme and were made by you or one of your extra plugins.
