Is it possible to remove the comments counter from the muffin recent posts widget?

Yes, it is possible. For that please use below css:

.Recent_posts ul li .photo .c { display: none; }

Probably because of CACHE! And this is the reason why we recommend to remove it completely while website is not ready and still in change.
