Yes, just place 1/2 wraps in a section. One with text and one with and image. Using a background image will be hard in achieving the effect you want, better use a simple image instead.

It could be that the theme files got corrupted. We would suggest making a backup of your theme files and removing the theme completly via FTP. Then download the newest version and install it.
