it'd be nice if that whole area opens the sub menu, not just the area around the + sign. Note that I placed rectangles where I'd like to have the whole area open the sub menu.

On your first screenshot, you have the dropdown menu expanded where the options you mentioned are visible.

If you want to have a full-screen menu, the Sidebar menu would be a better choice.
