A question about child themes?

I was reading that its recommended to install and use the child theme for a few reasons such as making it safer to do updates..  My question is if the updates dont affect the chlld theme which you have activated on your site then is that part actually getting updated? Or just the parent theme?  If so then whats the point if your main site isnt getting the update?  sorry im confused.

Hi,

we do not use child themes because it is useless for us. However, if you want to use it and you know how it works, you can of course. And if you would update parent theme only, you won't lose anything while updates. This mainly concerns files customization of course.

Ok so if you use the child theme, and update parent theme then is the overall theme still getting the benefits of an update?  Its kind of confusing lol.
