How can I make my portfolio look like portfolio theme without using the template?

Hi I want my portfolio to look like this > http://snag.gy/SCIVW.jpg

I try to manually create my portfolio page but cannot do it.

I used portfolio grid and it came out like this >> http://snag.gy/O4ilg.jpg

1. I cannot choose which picture to display in each portfolio grid. ( my picture are all in same category )

2. I did not get the border and content as in template.
