Simple theme menu icons

Hello.

I'm using the Simple theme and would like to add custom icons next to each tab in the Menu.  I downloaded the Menu Icons plugin.  However, it does not seem to work.  Are there certain setups in the Simple theme which block this feature?  It says in the Menu Icons details window that the active theme should use a 'default walker' instead of its own custom walker....

Would you be able to help me with this please?
