Where is the documentation for the [gallery] shortcode?

The use of the gallery shortcode is built into the Vet Demo, [gallery columns="4" link="file" ids="70,68,72,61,63,64,65,67,69,62,71,66"], but I cannot find out how to modify it.

Is this a native WP gallery, or from Muffin Builder, or from a plugin? I can't find out where the images are uploaded to the gallery, how the image IDs are assigned and how to modify it. As I understand it, an image is assigned an image ID after it is placed into a post. Then you can look in the text editor and find the Image ID. But these images were not put into a post, so I couldn't find the ID until I made a post using them.

Also, How do you change the layout? I could figure out how to change the number of columns in the shortcode, but nothing else.

Please tell me where to find out how this works.
