Transparent Images Loses Transparency when uploaded

I am trying to upload an image into the header. The image background is transparent as well as 3 bars that start out as blue and fade away. When the image is on my computer those 3 bars are transparent like they should be, but when uploaded, they lose their transparency and the bars fade to white instead of clear. I have tried to upload several different types and sizes of the image and always get the same results. Any suggestions?
