this is the first time we met with situation when the work was lost on update. If something like that happened, you should contact with your admin or hosting provider and ask for a backup from the time, when everything was fine.
Basically, the easiest, fastest and safest way of the update is as following: Log-in to your FTP, remove theme files (whole /betheme/ folder) and upload the newest files instead. During such process, we did never heard that the work was lost as all settings and content is being stored in database.
In reference to html coding, we do not understand what you mean. Do you ask, how to use Child Theme or what?
