How to define the height both of a subheader and it's image
I want to insert an image as subheader of lets say 300px high. where the image height as well as the space of the sub-header is 300px. So the picture fits nicely in the space it is meant for using the full width of the page.
The only thing I can accomplish is to define a featured image with the result that the image gets stretched in height to cover the whole screen but displayed only partly (the height of the reserved space for the subheader)
In the Salient theme I can select a header image and height. It just displayes that picture below the menu. That is the behaviour I am looking for.

please go to theme options>header&subheader>subheader and set the background size to whatever size you want, either contain or auto will do the trick. THere is no possiblity to set a fixed px height of the background.
