No self-referencing hreflang

Our SEO tools prompts 200+ errors on a clients website with the error message

No self-referencing hreflang

We tried to enable and disable the SEO and multi language settings of the theme, but we are facing a dead end.

Can you help with a fix?

  • Hi,

Please open your website in Firefox html mode (CTRL+U) and check html errors you got. Please fix them first and all should be fine.
    Thanks!
  • Sorry, are you sure this answer belongs to our hreflag error request?
  • I do not understand.
You have a lot of HTML errors on your website, like not correct <img> tags (you typed the <image> which is not correct), few not closed brackets and a lot more.

Please take a look at your page source code and fix the problems.
I suggest to use the Firefox browser, it's colored red then.

    Thanks
  • We didn't build the website, but thanks for the input, we will pass this on to the webmaster.

We do the SEO for that website and we never saw such problem with a theme. Can you tell how these 200 hreflang errors can be corrected?

    THX

  • Please fix these HTML errors first.
Also, we do not see these 200+ hreflang errors, we can see only two hreflang links on the beginning of the source code.
Can you show us some logs where these errors appear?
    Thanks
  • Here is the SemRush report. It's basically all pages, so there must be an easy fix.

  • There are 200 erorrs but not for one page. Those errors do not make sense because you do have the hreflnag set up: http://prntscr.com/nh0xo3
Please fix your HTML erorrs first. You are using HTML markup like <image> which does not exist. Those errors may cause the audit to show wrong values.
    thanks
  • Our webmaster fixed the <img> tags but he also says there is no connection to these errors.

Unfortunately a new SEO audit on SemRush gives same results 206 hreflang errors.
We never had a theme with that error, would you please have another look, it must be only one little thing since it is obviously on almost all pages.

    THX
  • Maybe if they could tell us what is exactly wrong and how to fix it, then it would be much easier.
We do not see any errors related with the hreflang on your page.
We cannot relay on some third party audit companies.
    thanks
  • We well go back to them again btw SemRush is the largest SEO platform worldwide, it should be in your interest as well, it is not "some" third party ;)

    Keep you posted.

  • This came from SemRush, any comment how to correct to have the self reference? THX

    Dear Bernhard,
Thank you very much for getting back.
Your patience and understanding is much appreciated.

Let me try to clarify this issue.
After taking a closer look at your problem, I tried recrawling your domain on our side. Please, note that 206 issues got triggered correctly as hreflang implementation on pages mentioned in the report can be considered incorrect. According to our report, your pages have no self-referencing hreflang, which you can see on screenshots here and here. On Page Source screenshot you can see that link in hreflang is not self-referencing. In case you indeed wanted the index page to get all the link juice from mentioned pages, then I would kindly recommend to hide the issue from Site Audit as irrelevant. To avoid any conflicts, we recommend that you review your hreflang attributes within your page's source code and fix issues like conflicting hreflang and rel=canonical URLs or no self-referencing hreflang URLs.
Also, I would kindly recommend checking our Google's recommendations on hreflang implementation.

    Kind regards,
    Gleb Kutsyy

  • Anything? thx.
  • Hey,
This is correct, but this is a Wordpress core function. It generates those links in the header, and we do not interfere in it. We only have basic SEO options in our theme. Those hreflangs you talk about would need additional coding which does not fall under our support capabilities.
    thanks
  • We finally fixed it and hreflang is not a WordPress core function.
