remove rollover on portfolio thumbs

I only want to show the image and have it clickable for larger view in modal.  Custom CSS for this?

no need for custom css. You can go to theme options>blog,portfolio&shop>portfolio and look for the 'project link' option, http://prntscr.com/ohif6j
