Permalink problem

I am trying to make my url- https://www.stagestheatre.org/upcoming-shows/2019-2020-season/james-and-the-giant-peach/.

But instead, the permalink defaults to- https://www.stagestheatre.org/upcoming-shows-2019-2020-season-james-and-the-giant-peach/

They are just slightly different but it causes the first link to not work. How do I fix this?

I see that you are using normal pages, not a portfolio or blog for this. In this case you have to set up the single event pages parent to a page named "upcoming shows", see:
