Hi, I am working on a website for a painter. The painter would like to show his paintings in 4 categories. if you click on 1 of the 4 categories you will see all the paintings that go with it. there must be a filter for the year so if you want to see all paintings from 2010, click on the filter 2010. 

so you come to a page with 4 pictures of paintings for example: nude, landscapes, abstract and sketches. you click on landscapes and you go to a page with all landscapes that have been painted. on this page is a filter with which you can determine the years. so if you want to see all landscapes from 2010 then click on 2010 etc. 

How could I do this?

Sadly, there is no option like that, but what you can do with the wordpress widget is to display all of the arts from some year/month.

It's called "Archives", and it can be inserted in sidebar (Appearance > Widgets)
