Lost all widgets and sidebars after update to 21.9.1

Not much more to say...the instructions @ https://support.muffingroup.com/documentation/sidebars/ don't work at all.

Theme options>sidebars still lists all the sidebars I created (4 total). Appearance>widgets displays "Inactive sidebar (not used) This sidebar is no longer available and does not show anywhere on your site. Remove each of the widgets below to fully remove this inactive sidebar." This 21.9.1 update has been a destroyer.

I am running WP 4.9.15, Be Theme child and all was well until the update.

Any advice?

confirmed, 21.9 is fine, with update to 21.9.1 alls sidebars are gone.
