full image background

Im using a blank page template. I would like to have a full background image that repeats to create a gradient. Where should I do this.
if I do this under Betheme options global. it only works on the top and on the bottom.

If I do this on the page itself, nothing happens.

How should I do this?

We are not sure what exactly you want to do but you can try Section item where is possible to set background image.

how do I get the section to show? when checking the elements I can see its there but its not visible on the site

What is invisible? Section settings or what? Did you set background image properly for the section? Please show us some screenshots of what you did and we'll have a look on it.
