Page load speed

I want to make sure my website is loading at a good speed. I have a decent server that it's running on. It has lots of memory, good processor, SSD. But when I load the default BE Theme and test it out the performance is not that great. Is there something I'm doing wrong here or need to adjust to improve these statistics?
