How to work on home page without going live?

I am trying to work on my site without going live but every time I put my splash page up the Home page disappears and I don't know where to find it so that I can work on it. I don't want to work on my home page while it is live. I am using the Profile template which is a one page design.

You can create a copy of your home page with the Export/Import feature to place it on the copy and to implement changes you made there to the live page.
