please tell me - directly under the modern menu = how do i reduce the whole header height?

even if i add a background header image

Hi.

Do you mean to remove it at all (you can do it using "Header minimalist" option in Theme options > Layout > Header section) or you want to decrease height? Please explain and we`ll try to help you.

I mean to simply reduce the height of the header / whole height.

Also, how do I remove the background header image?

To remove background header image and reduce height, you can use below custom css:

body:not(.template-slider) #Header_wrapper { background-image: none; }
body:not(.template-slider) #Header { min-height: 180px; }
