Change font color of menu item on active page

I managed to highlight the menu item and change the font colour to white on hover, but can't change the active font colour to white too, when you are on the active page. Please assist with the relevant css code:

I tried .menubackground a.current-menu-item { color: #ffffff!important; } but not working
