Favicon "Please use ICO format only"

Favicon "Please use ICO format only". When I try to upload a .ico file I get a WordPress warning saying 

fav.icoSorry, this file type is not permitted for security reasons.Any suggestions  if there is a risk I dont want to ftp to the content folder.
