WEBSITE CRASHES WHEN IT GOES INTO MAINTENANCE

Hi there - we recently moved the website and domain over to a new VM server. Now, when any plugin gets updated, the site goes into maintenance mode and crashes. The website was searching for a .maintenance file (that did not exist after the website move).... so we added the file .maintenance and the site loaded again.

Do you know what is going on here? This is a new error for me - not sure what is happening with maintenance...
