Creating a category filter menu

Hello,

I've created articles for one of my website's pages to display projects. I didn't set this page to "blog" because I wanted a specific design. However, I want to add a menu with my categories so I can sort my projects, but I haven't figured out how. I'd like the categories to be above my project grid, display six of them, and add a "see more" button to expand the other categories (see screenshot), but the sorting doesn't work, neither by adding JavaScript nor with PHP, and I can't find a simple way to add a category menu.

Can you please help me add a menu to sort my articles by category?
